Healthy Giving

// May 13th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Charity, Musings

Healthy Giving is a pledge drive that I started to raise money for The Kids Need to Read Foundation.  It is a weight loss committment, though I like to refer to it more as getting healthy than losing weight. I have been collecting pledges since January 23rd, and so far have raised over $700 for KNTR.

As a little incentive for folks to pledge, there is a prize drawing at the end of the drive.  Anyone who completes their pledge donation to KNTR is elligible for one of these prizes.  Prizes were donated by Healthy Giving sponsor Austin Browncoats, KNTR (comics), and an anonymous donor.

There have been 11 individual pledgers and 4 one time donations.  As of the last weight check-in (May 8th) I have lost 19 pounds!  It is very exciting and I feel so happy that I went through with my plans for this fundraiser.

I do have other plans for Healthy Giving, but I’m playing those close to my chest for the time being.

As of this posting, there is a little over 9 days left in the pledge drive.  I will be posting both here and at the Healthy Giving website with details about the final results and drawing winners.

I’m a Browncoat.  Now that I think back, I always have been, and I’m gorram proud of it.  I’m lending my skills as a webmaster to the global Can’t Stop the Serenity efforts to help raise money and awareness for Equality Now. If you are able, please consider donating to Equality Now.  Visit their website for more info.  Even better, head over to Can’t Stop the Serenity’s website and see if there’s a screening in your neck of the woods.  Go, have fun, watch a great movie (Serenity) and help out Equality Now.

There are two ways to fight a battle like ours. One is to whisper in the ear of the masses, try subtlely and gradually to change the gender expectations and mythic structures of our culture. That’s me. The other is to step up and confront the thousands of atrocities that are taking place around the world on an immediate, one-by-one basis. That’s a great deal harder, and that’s Equality Now. It’s not about politics; it’s about basic human decency.
